Why Chelsea signing Philippe Coutinho would be a smart move

According to Spanish outlet AS (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea have made contacts over a possible swoop for Philippe Coutinho in the summer.

Coutinho, 27, came through the youth ranks of Vasco da Gama in Brazil and moved to Inter Milan in 2008. After enduring a tough time at San Siro with limited opportunities, he made the switch to England with Liverpool.

He became an instant hit at Anfield, where he established himself as one of the best playmakers in Europe. His impressive performance earned him a move to Barcelona but the Brazilian failed to hit the hefty heights he showed in England during his 18 months stay in Camp Nou.

The former Liverpool forward moved to Bayern Munich on loan last summer and has had a heavy hand in helping the German giants reach the top spot in the Bundesliga table and has regained his confidence.

Meanwhile, Frank Lampard’s men have done a decent job so far despite their inconsistency showing up in between. The Blues have managed to stay within the top four with just a few games left in the campaign.

Despite doing a decent job in the league, the blues have found it difficult in the big games, especially in the Champions League. Against Bayern Munich, they were completely lost in every area as the Bavarians ran riot at Stamford Bridge.

Therefore, Lampard should strengthen his squad with quality players, who have experience at a higher level. Chelsea have got limited options in the attacking unit as Willian’s contract comes to an end in the summer.

Youngster Mason Mount is the only attacking midfielder in their ranks, while Pedro is well beyond his prime.

Coutinho was in England for 5 years and produced some of the best performances with Liverpool. Despite having a torrid time at Camp Nou, he seems to be regaining his form in Germany.

The 27-year-old has featured in 32 games this season, scoring 9 goals and providing 8 assists. He is also capable of operating on either flank, though he is an attacking midfielder by trade. He could be a huge boost to Chelsea if he can reproduce the same form he showed previously with the Reds.

Coutinho is known for his playmaking skills and his abilities can never be doubted. He has struggled for game time in the last two years and if Chelsea can give him the chance, he can prove himself and help the club scale greater heights.

Verdict

The Blues mostly have only youngsters in their squad, who have struggled in the European stage. And they need someone who can construct their games on a consistent basis and Coutinho can provide them with the experience in their attacking ranks.

Therefore, they should make a prompt move for the Brazilian in the summer and lure him to Stamford Bridge before the start of the new season.
