Why Victor Moses is surplus to requirements at Chelsea

According to Calciomercato (h/t Daily Mail), Inter Milan are keen to offer Chelsea loanee Victor Moses a permanent deal, however, on one condition.

Moses, who is in his fifth loan spell in six years since joining Chelsea in 2012, left for Inter Milan in January after his loan spell with Fenerbahce was cut short. Inter had sanctioned a six-month loan deal for the 29-year-old with an option to buy.

Since arriving in Italy, Moses has made 7 appearances for the Nerazzurri and contributed to the side with one assist. Moses, who joined his former Chelsea boss Antonio Conte at Inter is now wanted by the Serie A side but only if the Blues agree on reducing his asking price.

The versatile Moses’ current deal exercises a £10million option to buy. However, Inter are ready to secure his services permanently only if Chelsea offer him on a discounted amount. Despite making 128 appearances for Chelsea in total, the 29-year-old has never quite succeeded in establishing himself at Stamford Bridge.

Moses an unwanted man at Chelsea

Meanwhile, Moses enjoyed his most successful spell with the Blues during the two seasons (2016-17, 2017-18) when they were managed by his current boss, Conte. Moses, under Conte, made 78 appearances for Chelsea, netting eight goals and as many assists, helping them to an FA Cup victory and their last Premier League title (2017).

However, the arrival of Maurizio Sarri as Chelsea’s head coach pushed the Nigerian way down the pecking order, limiting his appearances to just six games last season. With the side’s younger talents such as Callum Hudson-Odoi and new signing Christian Pulisic rising through the ranks, Moses found his chances getting increasingly limited.

This saw him being offloaded once again to clubs such as Fenerbahce early in the season, and later to Inter.

Though Candreva remains Conte’s first-choice man in the right-midfield role, Moses’ arrival can offer the Serie A side some depth in the squad. With Moses clearly looking surplus to requirements at Chelsea at the moment, it would be better for the Blues to offload their unwanted man.

Verdict

Chelsea have as many as four wide-men already in their squad and bringing Moses back will only be a waste of their time and resources. Also, having sent on loan to other clubs this season, it is clear that the Nigerian is clearly not in Frank Lampard’s plans. Hence, Chelsea must try to lower their asking price and sell him to a club like Inter Milan, where he is wanted.
