Why Chelsea must hand fresh terms to Tammy Abraham immediately
According to The Athletic (h/t The Express), a new contract for Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham has stalled after the youngster declined to sign as the club has failed to meet his demands.
Abraham, 22, came through the ranks of the Blues’ youth system but was sent on loan to Bristol City, Swansea City and Aston Villa earlier in his career in order for him to get regular game time. He was instrumental in Villa’s return to the top-flight at the end of last season, contributing with 26 goals.
On his return to Stamford Bridge, the youngster has established himself as the first-choice striker under Frank Lampard. He has proven to be a game-changer and his impressive performances also earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s English national squad.
Chelsea started the season on a high note but they endured a slight dip in form after November. They have won just 2 of their last 7 league games but are clinging on to the last spot for Champions League qualification.
Lampard has had to do with injuries to his key players for the majority of the season and the youngsters in the squad have done a decent job so far. However, after failing to bring reinforcements in January, the manager should strengthen a few key positions in the summer.
At the same time, he should keep hold of the youngsters, who have been doing well throughout the campaign, and he should make sure that they have a future at the club. In that regard, Chelsea should offer Abraham a new contract at the earliest and meet his demands.
The 22-year-old has scored 15 goals in 34 games across all competitions and is Chelsea’s leading goalscorer this term. He has been impressive despite lacking enough support up front. He is one of the most exciting youngsters and could be seen as a player for the club’s future.
Apart from Abraham, the Blues have Olivier Giroud and Michy Batshuayi in the centre-forward role but both of them have fallen down the pecking order. While the Frenchman has regained some confidence, the Belgian international’s future at the club is uncertain due to the lack of consistency and game time.
This leaves the manager with only the young Englishman up front. He has also won several games on his own and has the ability to develop himself into a world-class striker. And Chelsea cannot afford to lose him.

Verdict
At 22, Abraham has already proven his worth at the highest level and still has got room for development. He should be given the opportunity to lead them in the long run and that is possible only if they meet his demands.
Therefore, it would be helpful for the club if they agree on a new deal for the London-born talent and keep him at Stamford Bridge for as long as possible.
