Why Celtic should sign Fraser Forster permanently in the summer

According to The Athletic (h/t Daily Record), goalkeeper Fraser Forster is willing to extend his stay at Celtic Park after his season-long loan spell. The report also suggests that Forster is willing to take a pay-cut to remain at Glasgow instead of moving to his parent club Southampton, where is contracted until the end of the 2021/2022 season.

Forster, 31, came through the youth ranks of Newcastle United and played for several clubs on loan including Bristol Rovers, Norwich City, and Celtic previously. He joined Southampton in the summer of 2014 and was a regular member in his first three seasons at St. Mary’s stadium.

After featuring in just one league game last season for the Saints, the Englishman moved to Scotland on loan with Celtic last summer. He has rediscovered his form under Neil Lennon this campaign and has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper for the Hoops.

In 26 games, the English international has conceded just 15 goals and has kept 13 clean sheets. He is one of the main reasons for Celtic’s success so far. He was also instrumental in the club’s progress to the Round of 32 in the Europa League this season and helped them lift the Bretford Cup back in December.

Meanwhile, the Hoops are twelve points clear on top of the Premiership table. They will need to be at their best in the Europa League against Copenhagen in the second leg. Lennon would be hoping that his best players remain at the club next season. Hence, Forster should be made to stay on a permanent basis.

Alex McCarthy and Angus Gunn have already established themselves at Southampton and there would be very little chance for Forster to find his place back. He has been impressive at Glasgow and should be allowed to continue at Celtic Park.

The 31-year-old is also an experienced campaigner and he could be the one to lead the Hoops for some more years.

Verdict

Forster has already won three Premiership Cups with Celtic and he would be the right person for them in goal. He has regained his form and if he is able to replicate the same form next season, he would be a brilliant signing for the Scottish Champions.
