Why Celtic should go all out to sign Sampdoria star Bartosz Bereszynski

As per Italian paper Il Secolo XIX (h/t MSN), Celtic are keeping tabs on Sampdoria star Bartosz Bereszynski in a bid to bolster their defence.

The report suggests that the Hoops could face competition to secure his services as Premier League side Southampton are also keen on signing the defender, who still has three more years left on his contract with the Italian outfit.

Born in Poland, Bereszynski spent time at the academies of Winogrady Poznan, Poznaniak Poznan and Warta Poznan before joining the youth system of Lech Poznan. He made 17 appearances for Lech’s senior set-up and was also a part of the club’s league title-winning campaign in 2009/10.

The 28-year-old joined Legia Warszawa in January 2013 and established himself as a key member of the squad, helping them lift four league titles and three Polish Cup titles. However, in January 2017, Sampdoria signed him. Since then, he has been on the top of his game. He has made 108 appearances for the Italian outfit to date.

He has also been capped 22 times by Poland and has been in good nick in the last few years. Therefore, Celtic should beat the competition to secure his services this summer.

Bereszynski could provide depth to Celtic’s defence

At the moment, Hoops boss Neil Lennon has two right-backs available at his disposal. Young Jeremie Frimpong struggled in his initial days at Celtic Park but he has slowly integrated himself into the starting XI. He has started the new campaign on a high note, having scored 1 goal in three games.

Israel international Hatem Abd Elhamed has struggled with injuries in the last couple of seasons. His fitness has been a major concern and he hasn’t been at his best. Thus, Celtic should consider bringing in a right-back this summer.

In that regard, signing Bereszynski seems to be a sensible move. The Polish international has been consistent in the last few years and is in good form. He featured in 29 games across all competitions last season but couldn’t contribute with a goal or an assist. Though his numbers may not be among the best, his performances in defensive situations have been excellent.

The former Legia Warszawa man could bring in healthy competition to Frimpong and Elhamed for the right-back spot and his experience could also come in handy for the club. He would definitely add depth to the backline and is also capable of operating as a centre-back.

Verdict

With limited quality on the right side of the defence, Celtic are in need of reinforcements. And Bereszynski, who has immense experience in the Europa League, could provide them with some much-needed quality. Thus, they should lure the Polish international to Celtic Park before the summer transfer window closes.
