Why Callum Wilson to Newcastle United would bolster their attack

According to the Express, Newcastle United are interested in signing Bournemouth star Callum Wilson in the summer.

Having come through the ranks of Coventry City’s youth system, Wilson, 28, featured for Kettering Town and Tamworth on different loan spells before joining Bournemouth in the summer of 2014. He immediately established himself as a key member of the squad and helped them get promoted to the top flight that season, scoring 20 goals in 45 Championship games.

Though he struggled in his first two seasons in the Premier League, the Englishman scored 14 goals last season and also earned a call-up to the national team. He has been one of the bright spots in the team despite the Cherries’ poor campaign. And thus, Newcastle should snap him up if Bournemouth are relegated to the second tier.

Wilson could be a leader in Newcastle’s attack

The Magpies, despite being in the 13th position in the league standings, have been inconsistent throughout the campaign under Steve Bruce. One of the major reasons for their inconsistency is the lack of intensity in front of goal. They have managed to score just 37 goals in 37 league games so far.

Summer signing Joelinton was brought in to lead the attack but the Brazilian has scored just 2 league goals in the whole campaign. Among the other strikers in the squad – Yoshinori Muto, Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have managed just 3 goals between them, with all three of them coming from Gayle’s boots.

If they continue to perform in the same way, Newcastle could struggle next season also. Therefore, the manager needs to bring in proven strikers to boost the attacking unit. And, Bournemouth’s Wilson would be a sensible option for the club.

The 4-cap English international has been brilliant for the Cherries in the last few seasons. In 186 appearances for the Cherries, he has managed to score 60 goals while providing 30 assists. He has immense experience in the top flight. This season, he has managed 8 goals but is capable of doing better.

His inclusion to Bruce’s squad would definitely bolster their attacking unit, whilst also adding some much-needed depth and quality to the squad. He would bring in healthy competition to the squad and can provide them with the goals.

Verdict

With a lack of quality up front, it is clear that Newcastle are in dire need of strikers. At the same time, Wilson is in fine form and would provide them with some much-needed extra goals. He has the quality and also has a few more years to offer is best. Thus, the Magpies should lure the former Coventry man to St. James’ Park in the summer.
