Why Caglar Soyuncu would be a fantastic fit at Manchester City
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has urged his club to make a move for Leicester City defender Caglar Soyuncu, according to Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old flourished through Bucaspor’s youth system and joined Altinordu in the summer of 2014. Two years later, he moved to Germany with SC Freiburg, where he caught the attention of several European teams with his impressive performances. Leicester City then picked him in the summer of 2018.
Though he was the fourth-choice centre-back last season at the King Power Stadium, Soyuncu has rightly earned his place under Brendan Rodgers this term. He has become one of the main players in the team and has taken the Premier League by storm with his effective defensive skills. Thus, Manchester City should make a move for the Turk in the summer.
Despite having a star-studded team, City have been the masters of their own downfall this season. While the attacking unit has done enough for the team, the defence has failed miserably. With injuries to key players, Guardiola failed to get the best out of his squad. He also opted out from signing anyone in January and that has cost the team a lot.
Soyuncu could be a future leader in Manchester City’s defence
The Cityzens have conceded 31 goals in 29 games, which is poor according to their standards. They had shipped in just 23 in the whole of the previous season and their defence has been shaky throughout this term. With Vincent Kompany’s departure and Aymeric Laporte’s long-term absence, they have struggled to maintain discipline at the back.
Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones shave been vulnerable on several occasions, failing to hit top form. And Fernandinho has been deployed in the centre-back role for the majority of the 2019/20 campaign. Thus, the manager needs to bring in defensive reinforcements at the earliest.
In that regard, signing Soyuncu would be a massive boost for the squad. He has featured in 28 games this season, forming a strong partnership with veteran Jonny Evans at the back for the Foxes. He has played a significant role in conceding just 28 goals in the league, helping Leicester City to the third-best defensive record this season.
The Turkey international would be a good young addition to Guardiola’s squad. He is in the form of his life and could definitely form a strong partnership with Laporte for City next season. He has the ability to succeed at a high level and is already one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

Verdict
It is clear that City are in dire need of centre-backs. Soyuncu is just 24 and could provide them with the quality in the long run. He could also be a crucial player in the future for City if he is able to keep up with the good from. Thus, they should lure the Turkish international to Etihad in the summer.
