Burnley signing this 19-year-old box-to-box gem on loan would do wonders for their midfield

Why Burnley would be wise to sign Connor Gallagher

The January transfer window is now open and clubs up and down the country will be looking to do business ahead of the second half of the season. Burnley are in need of reinforcements and looking for new faces at right-back, central midfield and the wings must remain a priority.

Last winter, the Clarets brought in Peter Crouch late in the window after allowing Sam Vokes to depart for Championship side Stoke City.

Burnley have been linked with a January move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who is currently on loan at Championship club Charlton Athletic. The Clarets must strengthen the middle of the park after allowing Danny Drinkwater to return to Stamford Bridge.

Gallagher played for Chelsea’s Under-21s in the Football League Trophy last season and was an unused substitute in the Europa League final defeat to Arsenal in May.

He has also represented England at Under-17, 18, 19 and 20 levels and won the U17 World Cup in 2017. In November, he stunned with a goal against Albania for the England U21s squad.

The 19-year-old underwent minor heart surgery 18 months ago before bouncing back to become Chelsea’s Academy Player of the Year in May and has been impressing in the Championship this term while on loan with Charlton Athletic.

Gallagher is a box-to-box midfielder with plenty of energy, who has scored six goals while on loan and his departure would prove a big loss for Lee Bowyer’s side. It is understood Chelsea have an option to recall Gallagher.

Verdict

Gallagher is a brilliant player and is already on fire at Charlton. If Burnley manage to sign him, it would be a brilliant move. They are struggling and he could be the man who changes their fortunes.
