Why Burnley should make a move for Joakim Maehle

According to The Sun (h/t Lancs Live), Burnley are interested in signing Genk right-back Joakim Maehle in the summer as they have been monitoring him for quite a long time.

Maehle, 23, came through the ranks of Aalborg BK’s youth system in Denmark and moved to Belgium with Genk in the summer of 2017. Since his arrival, he has been a regular member of the Belgian outfit and is one of the most consistent players in the squad.

He played a significant role in Genk’s title-winning campaign last season, racking up 3 goals and 5 assists in the league. And has established himself as a key member under Hannes Wolf. His impressive performances have also attracted interests from Premier League rivals Southampton and Crystal Palace, as per the report.

The Clarets have struggled for goals this season, netting just 34 times in 29 games. Chris Wood is their top scorer with 11 goals and the rest of the forwards have managed a few goals. It is clear that they need to bring in centre-forwards if they are to challenge for a higher place finish next season. Apart from that, Dyche needs to reinforce the squad in several key areas.

Maehle – A perfect replacement for Phil Bardsley at right-back?

One area where the manager should focus on strengthening is the right-back position. Matthew Lowton and Phil Bardsley are the only two right-backs available at the manager’s disposal. And both of them have been given equal opportunities.

However, both are above 30 and reaching the back end of their career. While Lowton has one more year left on his contract with the clubs, Bardsley’s contract is set to expire at the end of this season. Thus, a right-back is a must for Burnley. In that regard, signing Maehle would be a good move by the club.

The Danish U21 international is in a rich vein of form. He has already racked up 4 assists in 25 league games this season. He is one of the most exciting youngsters and already has Champions League experience, which could be a huge boost to Burnley. He would definitely add greater depth to the Clarets’ backline if he joins them next season.

Verdict

With Bardsley set to leave in the summer, Burnley would have limited options at the right-back. Maehle is just 23 and has his best years ahead of him. He could also go on to represent them in the long run if he is able to replicate the good form. Thus, the Clarets should sign the youngster.
