Why Brighton should invest in Luca Kilian for the future

According to Daily Mail, Brighton and Hove Albion have inquired about the possibility of signing Paderborn youngster Luca Kilian in the summer.

Kilian, 20, rose through the ranks of Borussia Dortmund’s youth academy and was successful with the club’s youth teams. He also played a key role in Dortmund’s U19 Bundesliga Championship title-winning campaign in 2016/17. He then joined Paderborn last summer and became a regular starter for the club.

He received rave reviews for his performances but his progress was hampered by injuries this season. He managed to make just 16 league appearances but his impressive performances have garnered the attention of several clubs including AC Milan and SC Freiburg, as per the report.

Kilian – A future centre-back for Brighton

One of the chief reasons for their unsuccessful campaign is the lack of stability at the back. Despite having a plethora of experienced centre-backs, the Seagulls conceded 54 goals this season, which is poor according to the Premier League standards.

However, they do have Ben White, who is set to return from his successful loan spell with Leeds United. But they have already sold Leon Balogun and young Leo Ostigard has just a year left in his contract with the club. Thus, bringing in a centre-back would help them keep their squad depth intact for the future.

In that regard, signing Kilian would be a wise move by the club. The German U21 international has been brilliant despite his side getting relegated to the second tier. He has also shown immense potential and could be a future leader for Brighton in central defence alongside White.

Experienced campaigners Lewis Dunk, Shane Duffy and Dan Burn are all 28 and they may not be around in the future. In that place, bringing in Kilian would help them secure their future. The youngster can develop himself under the guidance of Potter and could go on to be a crucial player for the Seagulls in the future.

Verdict

At 20, he may not have had the best of the seasons with Paderborn but Kilian has already shown immense qualities. His inclusion to Potter’s squad would definitely bring in healthy competition, whilst also adding some much-needed depth. Thus, they should make a move for the German this summer and keep him for the future.
