Why Aston Villa signing Jack Tucker would be a good move

According to The Sun, Aston Villa are considering a move for Gillingham youngster Jack Tucker in the summer. The report also suggests that the Villans could face heavy competition from rivals West Ham United, who are also interested in Tucker.

Tucker, 20, came through Gillingham’s youth ranks and was promoted to the club’s senior side in the summer of 2018. Since his debut, he has made 34 appearances for the League One side and has been impressive so far.

The centre-back has featured in 26 league games this season and is considered to be an integral member of Steve Evans’ side, helping the Gills reach 10th position in the table.

Meanwhile, Dean Smith’s men have suffered three consecutive defeats in the Premier League. They are fighting tooth and nail to survive in the top-flight.

One of the chief reasons for their abysmal performance is their inconsistency at the back. The defensive unit has conceded 52 goals in 27 games, which is the most by a first division team so far. Since their switch to a back-three, Villa have not been stable.

Tyron Mings, Kourtney Hause and Ezri Konsa have been regulars in the last few months but they haven’t been able to put in good performances. Belgian Bjorn Engels started the season well but has fallen down the pecking order in recent weeks. And club captain James Chester was allowed to leave on loan last month after failing to impress.

The Welshman’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season and he could be on his way out of Villa Park if he doesn’t extend his deal. Hence, the manager should bring in long-term reinforcements for Chester. And Smith should sign Jack Tucker in the summer.

Tucker has featured regularly for the side in this campaign after initially struggling to make it to the starting XI. He was also impressive against Tottenham U23 in the EFL Trophy, where he scored the winning goal.

The 20-year-old is predominantly a centre-back but is also capable of playing on the right-hand side of the defensive line. He would be able to develop himself if he moves in the right direction. He would improve Villa’s squad depth.

Verdict

Aston Villa’s defence has failed miserably and they are in dire need of reinforcements to their backline. And Tucker can be given a few opportunities as a backup. He has done well so far for the Gills and could be one of Villa’s players for the future.

Hence, Aston Villa must beat off competition from West Ham United to secure the services of the Whitstable-born central defender in the summer.
