Why Aston Villa should not consider signing Victor Wanyama

According to Nabil Djellit, a journalist for France Football (h/t Birmingham Live), Victor Wanyama could see his contract get terminated by Tottenham.

The report also claims that Wanyama has been a target for Aston Villa. He was linked with a return to Celtic while Premier League side Norwich City, Serie A giants AC Milan and Turkish champions Galatasaray are also keen on the Kenyan, as per the report.

Wanyama, 28, came through the ranks of JMJ Youth Academy in his homeland and played for Nairobi City Stars before moving to Belgium in 2008. After three years with Beerschot, he signed for Celtic, where he made 91 appearances, scoring 13 goals and further setting up 13.

Since 2013, he has been in England with Southampton and Tottenham. He has made 154 appearances across spells with both the clubs, scoring 11 goals in the process.

Though he played regularly in his initial season with Spurs, he has been frozen out since Jose Mourinho took charge of the club last November. Although he did feature in four games, he hasn’t made an appearance under the Portuguese in any competition so far.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa, who are enduring a disastrous spell in the top-flight since their promotion, have made several signings over the last two transfer windows. And making another signing in the near future would exhaust their resources.

They have six midfielders as of now, with the likes of Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz, Conor Hourihane, Danny Drinkwater, Henri Lansbury, Jack Grealish and the injured John McGinn all at the manager’s disposal. Since they already have a huge squad, it would be difficult to accommodate Wanyama in the team.

Nakamba and Luiz have been regulars this season despite the team’s poor performances. And to add depth in their squad, Drinkwater was signed on loan.

At the same time, Wanyama has not played for the majority of the season and therefore, Villa must not pursue his signature.

Verdict

Villa would do the right thing by avoiding a move for Wanyama. Instead, they must focus on finding the right players in the summer.
