Why Arsenal must go all out to sign Max Aarons

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have been linked with a January move for Norwich City right-back Max Aarons, according to a report by Daily Mail.

The 20-year-old enjoyed an amazing breakthrough season in 2018-19, making 41 appearances in the Championship as Daniel Farke’s charges won the title ahead of Sheffield United and Leeds United.

Aarons’ talent, attitude and maturity have naturally brought about interest from suitors. Even though he penned a new five-year deal in the summer, Norwich’s struggles in the Premier League have opened the door for him to be linked with other clubs.

Given the youngster’s recent form, his EFL Young Player of the Season award for 2018-19 and his performances for the England U21s, interest is inevitable – particularly with the Canaries rooted to the bottom of the table.

Arsenal have stepped up their interest in recent months following concerns over Hector Bellerin’s form since returning from injury (h/t Daily Mail). The Spaniard missed nine months of action in 2019, having ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in January. New Gunners boss Mikel Arteta might also have doubts about Bellerin’s pace and stamina.

Verdict

The Gunners also have some defensive conundrums to solve and Aarons fits the bill. Fortunately for Arteta, his team have the financial advantage. A lack of depth in the full-back positions, especially on the right, has been a real issue for the Gunners recently. While Bellerin has struggled with injuries in recent months, players like Ainsley Maitland-Niles have often had to fill in.

Aarons is a young, highly-rated English defender and by bringing in a player of his quality, the club would have somebody who can continue to develop in the years to come.
