Why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would be a massive signing for Wolves

According to the Mirror (h/t Daily Mail), Wolves are eyeing up a move for Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to bolster their midfield options before the transfer deadline.

As per the report, the 27-year-old is expected to slip down the pecking order at Anfield following the arrival of Thiago Alcantara from Bayern Munich. Wolves are trying to pounce on the opportunity by offering the Englishman assurances over his game time if he were to switch to Molineux.

It has been claimed that Liverpool would look to recoup the £25million that they paid to Arsenal for Oxlade-Chamberlain, who still has three years remaining on his contract.

Born in Portsmouth, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain rose through the youth ranks of Southampton and initially shot to prominence with the Saints in League One before completing a move to Arsenal in the summer of 2011.

The versatile midfielder gradually established himself as one of the mainstays of Arsenal’s midfield under former boss Arsene Wenger. Oxlade-Chamberlain went on to make 198 appearances for the Gunners across six seasons in North London, scoring 20 goals and registering 32 assists in the process.

Oxlade-Chamberlain won 3 FA Cups and 3 Community Shield titles at Arsenal before switching boats to join Liverpool in 2017. The England international has since added the Premier League and UEFA Champions League crowns to his cabinet despite his time at Anfield being blighted by injuries.

Oxlade-Chamberlain would add more quality to Wolves’ midfield

The Black County outfit have pressing concerns in several areas of the pitch. Now that their right-back woes have been addressed with the signing of Nelson Semedo, Wolves also need to consider adding more depth and quality to their midfield.

Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho have been regular fixtures in the middle of the park for Wolves over the past two seasons, with Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss filling in at times. Both Neves and Moutinho played more than 50 games last term, with Nuno lacking enough depth to rotate his squad.

To that end, it’s high time now for Wolves to reduce the workload on Moutinho, 34, by bringing in another top-quality creative box-to-box ace. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain certainly ticks plenty of boxes to come through the door at Molineux as a marquee addition.

Oxlade-Chamberlain presents a tried and tested option at the highest level, with a proven track record of goals and assists. The England international is also versatile enough to slot into a wide variety of roles in the midfield, meaning that his arrival would hand a significant boost to Wolves’ dynamics.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hasn’t quite managed to establish himself as a regular starter at Liverpool due to injuries and stiff competition for places. However, he remains a midfielder with immense quality and he still has several years left in his prime at just 27.

Having said that, Wolves shouldn’t hesitate to pay a handsome ransom for the England international this summer as he could be a massive asset to the club moving forward.
