Why a new contract for Daniel Iversen is the right decision by Leicester

According to Leicestershire Live, goalkeeper Daniel Iversen has signed a new five-and-a-half-year contract with Leicester City that would keep him at the club until the summer of 2025.

Iversen, 22, came through the youth ranks of Gording IF in Denmark and moved to England with Leicester’s U23 in 2016. He started regularly in the Premier League 2 for the Foxes in his first two seasons and kept 5 clean sheets in each of the campaigns.

Leicester sent him on loan to Oldham Athletic in the summer of 2018 and helped the club to a 14th place finish in the League Two standings. Though he was not at his best, he managed to put in a decent performance throughout the campaign by keeping 15 clean sheets in the league.

However, the youngster has been in fine form this term and has taken his game to the next level. In 32 games for Rotherham United on loan, he has already managed to keep 10 clean sheets and the Millers are on top of the League One table.

The 22-year-old’s impressive performance earned him a call up to Denmark’s squad for the European qualifiers though he is yet to make his debut.

Meanwhile, the Foxes have always depended upon their first-choice goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel, who has been a key figure in the team ever since he arrived back in 2011. He has also helped them lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the 2015/16 campaign. And has established as one of the best goalkeepers in England.

Apart from Schmeichel, no one has featured regularly for Leicester City in between the sticks and it would be the right time for them to have a back-up keeper. Danny Ward hasn’t featured in a single league game whereas, Eldin Jakupovic, who has played twice in the league this season, will see his contract coming to an end in the summer.

This would leave Brendan Rodgers with just two goalkeepers by the end of the season and therefore, handing a new contract to Iversen was the best decision by the club.
