Why a new contract for Chris Basham is the right step by Sheffield United

According to BBC, Sheffield United star Chris Basham has signed a new contract club that would keep him at Bramall Lane until 2022.

Basham, 32, came through the youth ranks of Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers before moving to Blackpool in the summer of 2010. After impressing with the Seasiders for four years, he was signed on a free transfer by the Blades. Since then, he has been instrumental for the side.

He first helped them get promoted to the Championship and then played a key role in Sheffield’s promotion to the top-flight in England. His contract was set to expire this summer but the Englishman has now followed in the footsteps of David McGoldrick and Oliver Norwood, both of whom have committed their future to the Blades.

Basham – An experienced and reliable centre-back for Sheffield United

The Blades, meanwhile, have done a decent job in the Premier League this season. Chris Wilder’s men defied all odds and stayed in the Europa League qualification spot for the majority of the 2019/20 campaign, only to miss out on the competition after a defeat to Southampton on the final day of the league.

However, one of the major reasons for their impressive performance is the stability in their backline. They have three established centre-backs in Basham, John Egan and Jock O’Connell. They conceded just 39 goals in 38 games and a key leader at the back was Basham.

The former Blackpool man started in every league game this term despite being 32 and led their defence brilliantly. He has done a splendid job and a new deal for Basham justifies his presence. He still doesn’t seem to slow down and has immense experience.

The 32-year-old could be an example for the other youngsters coming through the ranks. He has been consistent and his experience could come in handy for the club for a couple of years as they seek to make it to the Europa League. Given that the Blades have just three established centre-backs, keeping Basham at the club for a few years seems to be a smart move.

Verdict

At 32, Basham still has a few more years left to play at a high level. He has been one of their most consistent players so far and could still be a leader at the back. His presence could be useful in the most difficult situation as he is experienced. Thus, handing a new deal to Basham is the best thing the Blades have done.
