Why a new contract for Alfredo Morelos is the right move by Rangers

According to Daily Record, Rangers have been in talks with striker Alfredo Morelos over a new contract for several weeks.

The report suggests that back in March, Morelos signed a contract extension that will keep him at the Ibrox until the summer of 2023. But the Gers want to tie him down to the club for the long term and have been in negotiations with the Colombian (h/t Daily Record).

Morelos, 23, who came through the ranks of Independiente Medellin’s youth system, moved to HJK Helsinki initially on loan before joining the club on a permanent basis in January 2017. In 62 games for the Finnish outfit, he scored a whopping 46 goals while further setting up 13.

Six months later, the young talent was signed by Rangers and is currently in his third season with the Glasgow-based club, having scored 77 goals. He has established himself as one of the best No. 9s in the Scottish Premiership.

Last season, he finished as the league’s top scorer with 18 goals and has continued the same form into this campaign. In 39 games across all competitions, Morelos has scored 29 goals and provided 9 assists while leading the line brilliantly alongside Jermaine Defoe.

Therefore, the decision to tie down the Colombian international to the club does strike the right chords.

Meanwhile, the Gers have lost points in recent weeks. And the 23-year-old striker hasn’t found the back of the net in his last three league games since his return from a suspension.

Although Morelos is predominantly a centre-forward, he is also capable of playing on either flank. And his versatile nature of play would be of immense help whenever needed.

Verdict

At 23, the 29-goal striker has worked wonders. With Defoe beyond his prime, Morelos is capable of being the one to lead Rangers in their future endeavours.

Therefore, a new contract with improved terms must be handed at the earliest to the Colombian.
