Who is £30m Manchester United target Jose Luis Gaya? The answer to Mourinho’s left-back woes?

Manchester United are in the market for a left-back are reportedly targeting a £30m move for Jose Luis Gaya. Matteo Darmian is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer while Luke Shaw’s future also remains uncertain. Both spent last season in the fringes as converted midfielder Ashley Young cemented his position in the starting line-up ahead of the duo.

Juventus’ Alex Sandro was identified as a primary target but the Turin club’s asking price of £50million is quite high. Hence, it makes sense for United to eye a move for Valencia’s Luis Gaya instead.

Having emerged from Valencia’s academy, Gaya progressed through the ranks quite rapidly. The left-footed Spaniard can play either as a left-back or in the left side of the midfield. Unlike Sandro, Manchester United need not shell out a huge sum to acquire his services. The 23-year-old has been the first choice left-back at Valencia for the last three seasons, making over 100 appearances.

Last season, Gaya made 34 La Liga appearances, during which he provided five assists. He started 30 games as a left-back and thrice as a left midfielder.  Enjoying a passing accuracy of 82%, the Spaniard’s ability to hold on to the ball, dribble, cross and complete laser-guided key passes would make him a valuable addition for United.

The Red Devils saw cross-city rivals Manchester City win the Premier League title by a solid margin. To establish themselves as title contenders as well, United need to sign a left-back specialist ahead of next season despite Young’s impressive displays. Although he is versatile and dependable, Young is nearing the twilight years of his career and is not an ideal long-term solution.

Gaya helped Valencia finish 4th in the La Liga last season, behind the likes of Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. At a club of Manchester United’s pedigree, Jose Luis Gaya would have everything he needs to develop into a world-class player.

Capped 15 times by Spain’s U21 side, Gaya has the potential to become a superstar under the right manager. Now, it remains to be seen whether the Mestalla outfit would be willing to sanction a sale for one of their mainstays after qualifying for the Champions League. Keep an eye on this one.
