The BMF belt was on the line at UFC 291 but who won between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje?

UFC 291 had a huge fight as the main event. The BMF title was on the line as Jorge Masvidal was giving it up. Dustin Poirier had a rematch against Justin Gaethje, and the fight ended in spectacular fashion.

Poirier came into this fight with a win over Gaethje, with the clash taking place in 2018. The Diamond also defeated Michael Chandler in his last fight.

Gaethje, for his part, was coming off a win over Rafael Fiziev. The fight started off well with both stars landing blows to each other.

However, the second round saw a highlight reel finish from Gaethje. The Highlight used a superb head kick to absolutely knock out Poirier.

He put in another shot before the referee, Herb Dean, slid in to stop the fight. Gaethje won the fight and became the new BMF Champion. There also was a lot of respect between the two former UFC interim Lightweight champions.

This had shades of the head kick that Leon Edwards used against Kamaru Usman as well.

Who is the new BMF Champion?

The UFC has had only one BMF Champion before this clash. The title was handed to Jorge Masvidal after he defeated Nate Diaz at UFC 244. It was never defended after that but it seems that the UFC is keen to push it now.

Masvidal didn’t defend the title or put it on the line when he fought Kamaru Usman or Colby Covington recently, and it will be interesting to see what is next for Gaethje.

Justin Gaethje is the new BMF Champion and he is keen on fighting for the UFC Lightweight title. Islam Makhachev is the champion and he has been great since winning the title.

Gaethje fought for the belt but lost to Islam’s friend and mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Highlight then beat Michael Chandler before losing to Charles Oliveira, which was for the UFC Lightweight title.

The new BMF Champion might be keen on a title shot, and he could get it since he has never fought the current champion.

Oliveira might get the next shot at Makhachev since he is the #1 contender in the division.
