Who was Mark Sheehan? Mark Sheehan was the guitarist for the Irish pop band ‘The Script,’ which was formed in Dublin in 2001. He passed away on 14th April 2023 at 46, following a brief hospital stay.

In 2001, Sheehan, lead singer Danny O’Donoghue, and drummer Glen Power created the band. “Much loved husband, father, brother, bandmate, and friend Mark Sheehan passed away today in hospital after a brief illness,” the band announced in a statement on their social media platforms.

His family and bandmates requested that their privacy be respected in the message. Sheehan was praised as an “outstanding” example of Irish musical accomplishment by Ireland’s president, Michael D. Higgins.

It was a mark of the originality and excellence that Mark and his bandmates in The Script sought that they saw such success across the world,” he added, referring to the group’s six number-one albums in the UK and their third-place album in the US.

After signing to Sony Label Group label Phonogenic, the band relocated to London and released their self-titled debut album in August 2008. Singles “We Cry,” “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved,” “Breakeven,” and “Before the Worst” all preceded the album’s release. Both Ireland and the United Kingdom charted the album at number one. The couple had three children together and were married after Sheehan met Reena Sheehan, a session singer.

O’Donoghue explained to SUNDAY WORLD last year that Sheehan had taken a break to spend time with his family after the guitarist missed the band’s US leg of their tour. The gang, he said, is “a band of brothers who stick together no matter what” and is thus entirely behind Sheehan’s choice.

The band performed many gigs in Ireland when Sheehan returned. The band will be touring the UK and Europe this summer to support American singer Pink.

Many famous singers and acquaintances of the late Mark Sheehan grieved his death. “Thinking of you all at this time,” Former Love Island anchor Laura Whitmore said on Instagram. “Mark was one of the sweetest, most gifted people you could ever hope to meet,” she added.

OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder called Sheehan “one of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever had the pleasure of touring with and getting to know” in a tweet. “Mark, u will be missed,” he sadly said.

Sheehan’s death was a “great shock to music lovers everywhere and the Script’s legions of fans around the world,” as stated by Catherine Martin, Ireland’s minister of culture. “My deepest condolences to his family, fellow band members, and friends,” she said.

He will always be missed and present in our hearts for his most remarkable achievements in the line of music.
