Who is Luca Stephenson? All you need to know about Liverpool’s new target

Ever since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival in 2015, Liverpool have gone from strength to strength. Two top-four finishes and three cup finals in three years is a clear measure of success for the German manager. Klopp, at Borussia Dortmund, was renowned for his ability to work with young players and it is unsurprising to see him do the same at Liverpool.

The Sun reports that Liverpool have agreed on a fee in the region of £500,000 for Sunderland’s young starlet Luca Stephenson. Now, let’s take a closer look at his profile.

Background

Luca Stephenson is a 15-year-old midfielder, who is currently training in Sunderland’s Academy of Light. He plays as a central midfielder and the Liverpool manager has been personally keeping an eye on the talented youngster (h/t The Sun).

Stephenson is one of Black Cats’ brightest young prospects and since Sunderland are in the League One right now, parting ways with the youngster for a cut-price deal seems like a wise move.

What does the future hold?

If the transfer goes through, Stephenson should start off at the Kirkby Academy. He will be involved with the U18s under the guidance of manager Barry Lewtas. Stephenson is already touted as the next Jordan Henderson (h/t The Sun).

Incidentally, Henderson switched from Sunderland to Liverpool in 2011 and has gone on to become the captain of the historic club. Young Luca must work hard and remain patient before getting anywhere near the first-team squad. Furthermore, he must take inspiration from the iconic England international.

Liverpool, in recent months, have signed a host of young talented players. England youth international striker Bobby Duncan has arrived from Manchester City, while the Reds also swooped to sign Ajax teenager Ki-Jana Hoever, the 16-year-old right back.
