Who is Marlon Chito Vera fighting next? Henry Cejudo pulls out of UFC 292 due to injury 2

The exciting news was in store for UFC fans with the highly anticipated event, UFC 292, set to take place on August 19, 2023, at the TD Garden in Boston. One of the notable matchups scheduled was a bantamweight bout between former UFC Flyweight and Bantamweight Champion, Henry Cejudo, and Marlon Vera. However, disappointment struck when Cejudo announced on social media that an injury to his right shoulder had forced him to withdraw from the fight, just a little over a month away.

This injury echoes a similar incident in June 2019 when Cejudo had to undergo surgery on his other shoulder while holding the championship title. At that time, it was expected that he would be out of action for the remainder of the year. However, this time around, Cejudo remains optimistic that he can recover within six to eight weeks.

Cejudo recently returned from retirement with hopes of reclaiming his champion status, but his title fight against UFC Bantamweight titleholder Aljamain Sterling at UFC 288 ended in a close split decision loss. With his withdrawal from UFC 292, Marlon Vera received the disappointing news of losing his scheduled opponent.

Who is Marlon Chito Vera fighting next?

Vera, known as “Chito,” took to Twitter to express his reaction, which was short but perfectly encapsulated his emotions. In a six-second video, he bluntly said, “Well, f*ck.” The bout against Cejudo would have been Vera’s second appearance in 2023 and another opportunity to face a former UFC champion. He has previously fought three former champs, losing to Jose Aldo but emerging victorious against Frankie Edgar and Dominick Cruz.

While it remains unclear what Vera’s next step will be following the withdrawal, he did propose a potential replacement opponent, calling out another former champ, Petr Yan, on Twitter. Another option could be a rematch against the ‘Kung Fu Kid’ Song Yadong, who defeated Vera via unanimous decision in a thrilling clash in 2020. Song Yadong, meanwhile, expressed his desire to face Sean O’Malley after his recent stoppage win over Ricky Simon at UFC Vegas 72.

As for Cejudo, he has revealed his interest in potential future opponents once he recovers from his shoulder injury, mentioning Dvalishvili and Brandon Moreno. However, Vera’s plans for UFC 292 are currently unknown.

If the promotion decides to find a new opponent for Vera, they face the challenge of securing a suitable contender on short notice who can match up against a ranked fighter. Regardless of whether Vera secures a new opponent, UFC 292 promises to be an eventful night for the bantamweight division.
