Who is Moussa Wague? All you need to know about Barcelona’s new signing
Barcelona recently completed the signing of Senegalese defender Moussa Wague from Belgian outfit Eupen. At this moment, his buyout clause and the length of his contract are unknown. But the right-back was mostly signed to represent Barcelona’s B team that ply their trade in the second tier of Spanish football. (Sport English)
The 19-year-old will play under Garcia Pimienta for now but is expected to play a major role for the club in the near future. Moussa Wague made a name for himself when he scored 1 goal in 2 appearances at the World Cup this summer.

The defender must settle into Barcelona B’s system and style of play before he can move on to the main team. He surely possesses a lot of potential and a number of qualities to flourish with the Catalans. Barcelona currently possess Nelson Semedo and Sergi Roberto for the right-back spot, meaning it would be hard to see Wague gain any sort of game time in the first team.
Wague came through the ranks of Aspire Academy in Qatar before moving to Belgium in 2017. Since then, he made 40 appearances for the club, scoring 1 goal in that time. His goal against Japan this summer saw him become the youngest African goalscorer in the history of the competition.
The 19-year-old is a committed full-back who likes to make the occasional adventurous forward runs. He is an explosive full-back and a tough-tackling defender.
The right-back impressed with his pacy overlapping runs down Senegal’s right-flank. Only Sadio Mane and M’Baye Niang created more chances than the right-back for Aliou Cisse’s team.
Moussa Wague possesses brilliant positional awareness despite his tendency to attack often. The right-back was rarely caught out of position and was an able deputy for Senegal. He showed immense potential and maturity despite being such a young player. Wague is generally deployed as a right-back but the youngster is also capable of playing in a right-wing back role.
The youngster is currently at a stage where it’s important to grow in the right way. Moving into the Barcelona senior squad straight away would put too much pressure and unwanted limelight on the player.
Instead, it would prove far more fruitful for the player to learn the Catalans’ ways by playing for the B team before making the move to the main team.
