Burnley report: The Clarets defeat Southampton 2-1 at St Mary’s Stadium

Goals from Ashley Westwood and Matej Vydra gave Burnley a 2-1 victory over Southampton in their Premier League clash at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

Ashley Westwood gave the Clarets lead only in the second minute of the game. Southampton’s Danny Ings lost his bearings and allowed a Westwood corner to by-pass him at the near post and cross the line before goalkeeper Alex McCarthy was able to clear.

It was a disastrous start for home side Southampton but it didn’t take long for Ings to make amends with a fantastic finish from outside the box to level the scores as Burnley saw their advantage wiped off. And it was the hosts that went closest to grabbing a half-time lead through defender Jack Stephens, whose glancing header from a Sofiane Boufal cross came back off the Burnley bar.

Into the second half, Jeff Hendrick collected the ball on the right flank and spotted the run of substitute Matej Vydra. The Czech Republic international chested the ball down beautifully, showed the composure to lift the ball around Jannik Vestergaard before lashing a left-foot volley into the top corner to open his account for the season.

Burnley had chances to make the final few minutes more comfortable and Jay Rodriguez was denied a goal on his return to St. Mary’s by McCarthy’s save. Southampton could not kick on from going behind as Sean Dyche’s men got over the line to move ever closer to another season in the top-flight.
