West Ham Opinion: Why the Hammers should sign Yacine Brahimi?

According to last month’s report from The Sun, West Ham had sent their scouts to watch Porto star Yacine Brahimi in action against Portimonense.

Yacine Brahimi, 29, has been with FC Porto for five years following his 2014 move from Spanish side Granada. After scoring 13 goals and supplying nine assists this season, the Algerian’s time at Porto could be coming to an end.

The jet-heeled attacker will become a free agent next month and is likely to have a number of suitors, but West Ham must win the race for his signature.

West Ham ended the 2018/19 season 10th on the table in Manuel Pellegrini’s first season at the London Stadium. With the quality players at his disposal, Pellegrini would have been disappointed with a tenth-placed finish. However, going by how the season started for the Hammers, it’s a decent finish as things could have panned out differently.

Pellegrini must now focus on recruiting players to challenge for a place in Europe. He needs players that can come up with assists and goals consistently. One player who does fit the bill at West Ham is Brahimi.

Brahimi is a versatile player, who can play as a left winger, a left-sided midfielder, attacking midfielder or on the right wing. He is an expert dribbler and knows to make the right use of the ball in the final third. The Algerian international is good at drifting into space and exploiting the gaps in between the lines of the opposition defence.

The 29-year-old is direct, intelligent and has the pace to burn, which makes him such a tricky customer to deal with. He is creative and has the vision to unlock tightest of defences in one blink of an eye. Brahimi’s technique and off the ball movement is fantastic and that coupled with his dribbling skills and composure in front of goal makes him a lethal player in the final third.

Not to mention, the ex-Granada playmaker’s experience, pace, skill-set and aggression will serve him very well in the Premier League if a move does take place.

Verdict

West Ham need a couple of quality attackers and Brahimi will be a good fit, given he is operating in his prime at 29. Plus, his free agency adds more value to the deal and Pellegrini should definitely add the Algerian to bolster the attacking ranks of his squad ahead of the 2019/20 season.
