West Ham Opinion: Why Mason Mount would be a top signing for West Ham

According to a report from Football.London, West Ham are the bookmakers favourites to sign Chelsea youngster Mason Mount this summer.

Mason Mount, 20, was incredible for Derby County in the Championship this past season. The 20-year-old was key for Frank Lampard’s side and played a huge role in helping them get to the Championship play-off final, unfortunately the Rams were beaten 2-1 at the hands of Aston Villa.

The midfielder is highly-rated at Chelsea could be one of a host of youngsters who could benefit from Chelsea’s impending transfer ban, however, as could a number of their youngsters who have spent time away on loan. Even if Mount stays at Chelsea, he’ll have to earn a place in the starting XI as the Blues are already blessed with a plethora of options in midfield.

Well, it shouldn’t be a surprise to see him linked with a move to West Ham after managing to perform exceptionally well with the Rams. Whether Mount would be available this summer remains to be seen, but the Hammers should definitely make an attempt to sign him from Chelsea.

West Ham were short of options in midfield this past season as Manuel Pellegrini’s side finished tenth in the table. It was a respectable finish considering the start the Hammers had and the pressure Pellegrini was in of getting sacked inside just a year. Nevertheless, the Chilean tactician should prioritise improving the midfield ahead of the new season.

Injuries to Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez meant the burden fell on the shoulders of Mark Noble and Declan Rice. Noble and Rice were consistently good in the middle of the park, with the latter being one of the standout performers for the Irons. With Noble on his last legs, Wilshere injury prone and Pedro Obiang inconsistent, the Hammers need another midfielder that could be relied upon.

Mount would fit the bill perfectly at the London Stadium. He proved his quality in the Championship and will be raring to make an impression in the Premier League. The 20-year-old can play in different positions across the midfield and his potential acquisition could see him provide a creative spark often lacking in West Ham’s engine room this past season.

The England Under-21 international is a great dribbler and has a good turn of pace to trouble the opposition defenders. He’ll add extra creativity going forward and should fit in well with Pellegrini’s style, thus being a real force in the Premier League.

Verdict

More than anything, West Ham need a new midfielder in their squad and if they could pull off a deal for Mount then it would be an impressive move.
