Chelsea 3-3 Southampton – Werner at the double but the Saints hold on
Chelsea welcomed Southampton as both sides restarted their league campaign. An end-to-end game was witnessed at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea held to a 3-3 scoreline. Southampton recovered from a 2-goal deficit but Kai Havertz struck the killer blow. It looked enough but Theo Walcott had other ideas as his shot was deflected in by Jannik Vestergaard in stoppage time.
The game went as expected, with Chelsea looking great in the attack but suspect when defending. Southampton did well to keep themselves in the game, and ultimately held the home side to a draw.

Kepa (GK) – 5
Another game, another error-strewn performance. Quite what he was doing when Che Adams scored the second for Southampton is beyond anyone’s understanding.
Cesar Azpilicueta (RB) – 6
Often had to slot into central defence as Ben Chilwell ran up the other flank.
Andreas Christensen (CB) – 6
Not the best of performances from the Dane. Didn’t really do much wrong though.
Kurt Zouma (CB) – 6
Got an early chance to score but looked defensively suspect. Equally at fault for the second goal when his half pass put Kepa in a spot.
Ben Chilwell (LB) – 8
The left-back who was doubtful for the game ended up as one of the best players for his side. Was literally everywhere and proved to be a thorn in Southampton’s side.
N’Golo Kante (DM) – 6
Nothing spectacular but a solid showing nonetheless.
Jorginho (DM) – 7
Provided another of his trademark long balls to assist Werner’s second goal. Kept things tidy in the midfield.
Kai Havertz (AM) – 7
A tale of two halves for the record signing. Looked anonymous throughout the first half and gave the ball away, which resulted in Southampton’s first goal. Redeemed himself with a goal of his own.
Mason Mount (LW) – 6
A decent shift from the youngster with moments of brilliance. Was hooked off in the 72nd minute for Hakim Ziyech.
Timo Werner (ST) – 9
What a way to score your first Premier League brace. A dummy run, solo finish for the first. A delicate dink over the keeper and header for the second. Topped it off with an assist for Havertz. Top performance from the new man.
Christian Pulisic (RW) – 6
Looked a bit rusty on his return and played it safe. Did make some good runs into the box.
