Watford Opinion: Why Kenny Lala would be a good fit at Vicarage Road?

According to a report from French publication L’Equipe, Watford are interested in signing Strasbourg full-back, Kenny Lala. (h/t Sport Witness)

Kenny Lala, 27, enjoyed a fantastic season with Strasbourg, helping the club finish 11th in the table. His dazzling displays, which included five goals and nine assists in Ligue 1, caught the attention of many clubs around Europe, along with Watford.

Watford will be looking to build on the relatively successful 2018/19 Premier League campaign. The Hornets did eventually finish 13th in the table, despite some really good performances under Javi Gracia. Gracia had a chance to win the FA Cup but his team were completely outplayed by Manchester City at the Wembley.

Now, the Watford manager has a big summer transfer window ahead of him to build his squad for the next season. If Gracia is to help the Hornets qualify for Europe, he’ll need to keep hold of the core of the team, while adding a few players to his squad.

It has to be players who can make a genuine impact at the Vicarage Road over the course of a season. But while the Hornets won’t have a big budget to operate in the transfer window, the money has to be spent on the right areas and on right players.

Watford struggled defensively and the 6-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City in the FA Cup final was enough to suggest Gracia the chronic problem of his team. A strong, commanding defender should be on Gracia’s agenda that could partner either of Craig Cathcart or Christian Kabasele in central defence next season. Apart from that, they also need a new right-back in the squad.

Daryl Janmaat and Kiko Femenia competed with each other for a place at right-back. While both the players had good and bad times, Gracia must pursue a consistent full-back that is proficient at going forward as well as being defensively solid.

To that end, Kenny Lala would be a perfect choice for the Hornets. The Frenchman operates with a lot of pace, flair and energy that helps him keep the opposition on their toes. Lala is an offensive full-back who can also play as a right-wing back, right-sided midfielder as well as on the right wing.

The 27-year-old is also defensively astute, as he reads the game very well and never hesitates to stick his leg to stop the opposition’s attack.

Verdict

Considering how Watford struggled defensively this past season, the club shouldn’t hesitate to spend big on Lala, who at 27, will be the perfect fit at Vicarage Road.
