Nick Diaz will be taking on Robbie Lawler in a rematch at UFC 266
The West Coast OG is back. Nick Diaz is set to return to the Octagon after a long gap of more than 6 years. The Stockton-based fighter last fought on the 31st of January, 2015 at UFC 183.
His opponent, Robbie Lawler is the former UFC welterweight champion. They will be fighting it out on the 25th of September, later this year at UFC 266.
The fight will be a five-round non-title fight, only the second of its kind. The first one being Nick’s brother Nate Diaz vs Leon Edwards at UFC 263, earlier this year.
The news was broken by Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports, after he had learned the same from UFC President Dana White. It was later confirmed by other outlets like ESPN and MMA Fighting.
Diaz, last fought Anderson Silva at UFC 183 on the 31st of January, 2015. The fight was originally a unanimous decision win over Silva, but was overturned to a no-contest after both the fighters tested positive for banned substances.
Diaz was banned for testing positive for marijuana and faced a significant ban. He was eligible to compete in 2016 once again. However, his interest waned, and he disappeared from the sport.
Robbie Lawler, on the other hand, last fought Neil Magny in August 2020. He lost the fight due to a unanimous decision. He is currently on a four-fight skid.
Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler last fought way back in 2004
2004 was the year when Nick Diaz and Robbie Lawler first fought. A staggering 17 years later, they will be facing off in a rematch.
It was April 2004, UFC 47, and Lawler was coming up as a scary welterweight. He took on a 20-year old Diaz.
All Diaz needed was 2 rounds to knock the scary Lawler out. Lawler would be looking forward to exacting revenge this time.
