Nate Diaz’s former opponent comes out in defense of the Stockton star amidst battery charges

After a fight on Saturday night in New Orleans, police there have issued an arrest warrant for former UFC star Nate Diaz. After video of a scuffle on the city’s famous Bourbon Street went viral, the 38-year-old was charged with second-degree violence for allegedly choking YouTube star Rodney Petersen unconscious.

“After investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Nate Diaz. He has been charged with second-degree battery.” The spokesperson added that Diaz was not yet in custody.”

In the video, Petersen can be seen confronting Diaz as people fight around them. Diaz then gets Petersen into a chokehold before letting him drop to the ground, apparently unconscious. Police said Petersen was found “bleeding from the rear of his head.”

In the wake of these developments, former opponent of Diaz came out in his defense on Twitter, stating:

“Free @NateDiaz209.”

Jake Shields comes out in defense of Nate Diaz

Everyone in the mixed martial arts world knows about Nate Diaz’s fight history. The Stockton native is not one to avoid a fight when he or his teammates are the target of verbal abuse. His history of physical altercations gives him the label of “Stockton’s bad boy.”

Diaz got into an altercation on Bourbon Street after a Misfits boxing night last week. Over the weekend, a video of a fight between many people went viral after it showed Rodney Petersen, a man who resembles Logan Paul, getting choked to unconsciousness by Diaz.

Longtime teammate Jake Shields has now spoken out in support of Diaz, saying that the former UFC superstar acted strictly out of self-defense. On Twitter, Shields stated [via Sportskeeda]:

“After hearing New Orleans has issued an arrest warrant against Nate Diaz, I called my team to carefully break down the footage. Give this thread a look and give me your opinion on if this is self-defense.”
