Miesha ‘Cupcake’ Tate made a stunning return to the UFC after a gap of almost 5 years

5 years away from the Octagon, Miesha Tate hardly looked out of touch. It looked like she had continued from where she had left off at UFC 196 (her title-winning performance).

Tate faced 43-year old Marion Reneau in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 31 headlined by Islam Makhachev vs Thiago Moises.

In the final round of the fight, Tate knocked out the veteran Reneau with a flurry of punches. The win also earned the former women’s bantamweight champion the Performance of the Night bonus.

Another stunning achievement Tate accomplished after her win was going past the ‘GOAT’ Amanda Nunes herself.

Tate now has 12 wins in the UFC/ Strikeforce combined, 1 more than Nunes. And no women’s bantamweight has more wins than Tate.

The reason Strikeforce has been included is that the promotion was a part of the UFC until it became defunct in 2013.

Miesha Tate responds to Holly Holm’s callout

Holly Holm and Miesha Tate fought at UFC 196. Holm was the UFC women’s bantamweight champion going into the fight.

Just when it looked like the fight would be going the distance, Tate choked out Holm (rear-naked choke) to earn a submission victory towards the very end of the first round.

With that win, she clinched the UFC women’s bantamweight championship.

Just ahead of UFC Vegas 31, Holm posted an Instagram issuing a rather formal callout to her old rival.

Holm wrote:

“I’d love to get the chance to redeem that loss. You want to see it too? Holm vs Tate 2?”

Following her win over Reneau, Tate responded to Holm’s callout. At the post-fight presser, Tate said:

“I’m sure Holly and I, I have no doubt about it, her and I will fight again.”
