‘The Motown Phenom’ Kevin Lee was released on the 30th of November, 2021

Kevin Lee who had been a part of the UFC for almost 8 years was released from the promotion on the 30th of November.

Following his last fight against Daniel Rodriguez at UFC on ESPN: Barboza vs Chikadze in August 2021, Lee tested positive for Adderall. He was handed a 6-month suspension for the same.

It later come to light that the drug was not out of his system as quickly as he would have wanted it to be. A case of miscalculation.

It is also believed that it would have been the cause for his release.

Lee made his UFC debut on the 1st of February, 2014 at UFC 169. Starting off with a unanimous decision loss against Al Iaquinta, Lee found his footing pretty quickly after that.

He went on to win the next four fights before being knocked out by Leonardo Santos at UFC 194. A five-fight winning streak followed which led him to an interim title fight.

Taking on Tony Ferguson, Lee succumbed to a third-round submission defeat. Since then he managed to win only 2 fights, while losing 4.

It is worth noting that Lee is fairly young – 29 years old.

Kevin Lee’s manager speaks out following his release

Following his client Kevin Lee’s release, his manager Marquel Martin issued a statement.

Martin claimed that Lee’s release couldn’t have come at a better time and also that it was a good time for him to explore other opportunities.

“If there was ever a time to be a free agent it’s now. Kevin Lee has a lot of great opportunities waiting for him outside the UFC.”
