“Reason I got into the sport” – Kay Hansen talks about following Ronda Rousey’s footsteps into the UFC

UFC Women’s strawweight Kay Hansen spoke about Ronda Rousey being a huge inspiration in her career

Rowdy Ronda made women’s MMA what it is now. With her indomitable fighting skills, she was unstoppable in the early 2010s and into the mid-2010s.

She was what Conor McGregor is to the UFC, before the Irishman took the promotion and the world by storm.

However, her dominance petered out after back-to-back losses against Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes. Despite not having a record as good as Nunes or Valentina Shevchenko, the legacy Rousey has left behind will never be matched.

She has inspired a lot of women to take up MMA, which is primarily a male-dominated sport. One among the inspired women is UFC strawweight Kay Hansen.

Hansen spoke to RT Sport in an interview, revealing that Rousey was the reason why she got into the sport of MMA. She also mentioned how Rousey, whom she looked up to, congratulated on her armbar submission victory over Jinh Yu Frey, last year.

Hansen was quoted as saying:

I remember just being backstage and doing my interview with Megan Olivi, and she was like, ‘Did you see Ronda’s tweet’. I was like, ‘No! I haven’t got to see anything’.”

She then continued:

“It was super cool because I looked up to her, and she is the reason why I got into the sport. So. it’s cool to see, women like me, following in her footsteps, and one then one day girls are gonna follow in our footsteps. It was kind of cool to see that cycle.”

Kay Hansen reveals she is recovering from an eating disorder

She recently revealed in the same interview that she has been suffering from an eating disorder, and has been actively trying to recover from it.

She said:

“I’m just recovering from like, kind of an eating disorder…I finally got cleared for training last week. And, I’m finally getting back into training. I’m only doing one session a day now, to see how my body reacts…I’ve kind of let my body resettle.”

Hansen believed that she will soon return to the octagon.
