GSP says he was amazed by how good Dustin Poirier was in his win against Conor McGregor

It’s been a while since Conor McGregor was handed a round 2 TKO loss by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

The two even have a trilogy fight to look forward to now. The first encounter between them, at UFC 178 in 2014, went in the Irishman’s favour.

And after Poirier’s win, McGregor pushed for a rematch. Dana White is yet to yet to put a date on the fight but it could happen as early as May.

But the last fight hasn’t become irrelevant yet. Talking to Ariel Helwani of ESPN MMA earlier this week, GSP mentioned how impressed he was by ‘The Diamond’.

He compared Poirier’s performance to Jan Blachowicz’s showing against Israel Adesanya in terms of how much it caught him by surprise.

GSP never thought Dustin Poirier was this good

And not just him, fans around the world would probably not have seen a round 2 KO coming. Poirier had a strategy in mind and he executed it well.

“Let’s not take away the performance of Dustin Poirier. It was amazing. He deserved the win. Sometimes we have the tendency, when someone is so dominant, to only talk about he didn’t look the same… Blachowicz in that fight surprised me. He showed me how good he was. Like, I was not expecting to see [that]. I didn’t know how good he was. Same with Dustin; I didn’t know how good he was.”

If Georges St-Pierre is praising you, then you know you’re doing something. The Canadian knows a thing or two about MMA himself.

The UFC Hall of Famer has been tipped to make a return but recently stated that there is nothing in the sport right now that can motivate him to come back.

But as for Poirier, he seems to have his best days ahead of him. A win against McGregor would surely set him up for a title fight.

Whether that would be against Khabib Nurmagomedov or someone else is something that remains to be seen.
