Dustin Poirier mocks Colby Covington’s callout for a fight against him, and says that he needs to beat some top welterweights instead

Colby Covington famously called out for a fight against Dustin Poirier, following his dominant victory against rival Jorge Masvidal at UFC 272. The callout came as a surprise for many since Poirier hasn’t fought a single fight at welterweight before.

Covington even resorted to begin verbal hostilities againts Poirier’s family, to bait him into a fight with him. But Poirier feels there’s no axe to grind, and a fight against Colby does not interest him. ‘The Diamond’ was at the UFC 50 event, cornering his teammate AJ Fletcher, and responded to the callout by saying,

“It’s cute,” Poirier told ESPN backstage during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 203 event. “It’s all good. It is what it is. People want big fights. That’s a big fight. He wants big fights. Obviously he’s not in line for the title fight. He lost twice to the champ, so he probably needs a few more wins. But I would think if you want to get back to that strap you have to fight welterweight contenders. I don’t now what I’m doing, if I’m going to welterweight, if I’m staying at 155. We’ll see. But it is what it is.”

Dustin has his sights set on a fight against fellow lightweight turned welterweight- Nate Diaz. He believes the fight might finally come together this summer.

“Props to him” – American Top Team owner Dan Lambert reacts to Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal

American Top Team head honcho reacted to Colby Covington’s feisty performance against Jorge Masvidal.

The narrative building up to Colby Covington vs Jorge Masvidal wasn’t just friends turned rivals- but for Colby in particular, he was going against everyone from his former team at ATT. Following heated run-ins between the pair, and venom spreading to the gym, Dan Lambert suspended both fighters from the gym, but only Masvidal was welcomed back.

The sweet taste of vengeance must have felt good for Colby in this lopsided victory. He did not hold back and dished out insults to everyone from ATT, during the post-fight interview.

Speaking about the fight to The Schmo, Dan Lambert said, “It went probably the way lot of people thought it would go. Colby’s gas and wrestling is good and he put it on Jorge. H was able to neutralize Jorge. Jorge had some moments, and dropped him in the fourth, but Colby’s got a good chin and great gas tank. So props to him.”

Giving updates on where Jorge’s head is at after the fight, “I speak to Jorge all the time. He is in good spirits. Wishes he had better gas and wrestling in the tank. One loss isn’t gonna off track him so much. I’d like to see him fight Nate [Diaz] or Conor, see him in big fights now.”
