Khabib Nurmagomedov had an unbelievably close bond with his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov

2020 was a very tough year Khabib Nurmagomedov. He lost his father due to the coronavirus on the 3rd of July, who had been a pillar of support, in both his career and life.

A crestfallen Khabib then faced Justin Gaethje three months later on the 24th of October at UFC 254.

It was the first time his father would not be by his corner. The late Abdulmanap had made it a point to accompany his son in all his professional fights, as a loving father and coach.

Khabib eased past Gaethje, as he won the fight via. technical submission due to a triangle choke. No sooner did Gaethje tap, Khabib sunk to his knees and wept in sorrow, in remembrance of his father.

All the bottled-up emotions poured out in a matter of seconds. The inconsolable Dagestani finally got back up for the post-fight interview with Jon Anik and hung up his gloves.

Why did Khabib Nurmagomedov retire?

At the post-fight interview with Anik, Khabib had a lot to say about his family and the tough times they had due to the death of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

The Eagle first explained how he had been training the sport for more than 20 years with his father.

He then revealed that he had promised his mother that the fight against Justin Gaethje would be his last and he would never fight again without his late father by the ringside.

Khabib is a man of his word and would do anything to keep the word of his family. And hence, he gave up his favourite sport.

With speculations surrounding his UFC future immediately after hanging up his gloves, the Russian confirmed his retirement officially on the 18th of March, earlier this year.
