Leading up to UFC 273 UFC president Dana White had suggested that the welterweight bout between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns will determine the next title contender at 170.lbs. Chimaev oozes confidence when he speaks, and it is his unrivalled and nonpareil work ethic that is the source of this belief. The Chechen was the star attraction at the UFC 273 pre-fight media scrum and answered all the questions with his usual boldness and mettle. When asked about a potential fight with number one ranked contender Colby Covington, Chimaev felt that the American will turn down a fight against him or go running for the cops. He even elucidated further that the ‘Chaos’ should be cut from the UFC.

“I will be happy if they do that [fight with Colby Covington] but I don’t think so,” Chimaev said. “That guy [doesn’t] want to fight me. He’s going to go to the cops. He’s going to go to the cops, call the cops. Dana White will be in jail if they make that fight.

“He talks too much in the media and then when he sees the face-to-face, he goes to the cops. He’s not that guy. To me, if I’m honest, the UFC has to kick him out. He’s a b****.”

Speaking to TMZ Sports, White looked rather pumped for this weekend’s card, and suggested a potential match for Chimaev post-UFC 273. He said, “In a perfect world, you know, I have a fight coming up on ABC. If Khamzat Chimaev should win, I would love to do a fight with him and Colby.”

‘I’m gonna smash that scared little guy and knock him out’ – Things get heated between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns at the UFC 273 press conference

Leading up to UFC 273 Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Burns have been somewhat respectful of their opponent. The contenders even, sized each other up when they stumbled upon each other at the hotel lobby after a weight cutting session. However, things escalated at the UFC 273 press conference when Chimaev spoke about how he does not consider this match-up as a real threat.

The Chechen born Swedish mixed martial artist was the star attraction of the ceremonial press conference, and he was oozing with confidence and looked fired up, even punching the table at one point depicting that he’s rearing to go. Burns resorted to some unusual mockery of Chimaev’s accent and looked rather miffed.

“I’m gonna smash that guy and knock him out, one minute. I promise you. Little boy. Scared, scared boy. I feel it. I said to him yesterday, show his power, he couldn’t show that. He said I’ll show you Saturday and he turned around. I was there.”

“There’s power in my hands. I don’t care what I gotta do, I’m gonna jump in that cage and smash that guy. I don’t care. He will be down, I will smash his face. [If] we stand up, I will knock him out. I don’t care, brother. That guy is not f***ing from Brazil. I am more in Brazil than him, I am from Cantagalo. He is not Brazilian.”
