Tyson Chandler had a basketball in their hands very early in his career. He shared a close relationship with his grandfather who fixed a rim onto the house tree. Chandler played basketball for Dominguez in Compton, California where he drew comparisons to Shaquille O’Neal. He led the Dons to a state championship in his senior year averaging 26 points, 15 rebounds, and 8 blocks a game. Plenty of universities approached him but Chandler declared for the NBA draft right after graduating in 2001.

He was picked second overall by the Los Angeles Clippers who immediately traded him to the Chicago Bulls. He was a part of their rebuilding process but was traded away to New Orleans for P. J. Brown and J. R. Smith. He finished the 2008-09 season as the franchise’s all-time leader in field goal percentage (.611) and rebounds per game (11.3). He had only played 197 games for the team.

The Charlotte Bobcats traded for him in 2009 and traded him to Dallas a year later for Erick Dampier, Eduardo Nájera, Matt Carroll, and cash considerations. Chandler was a reputed big man known for his defensive efforts but wasn’t a big offensive threat. He was the perfect fit in the Mavericks roster alongside Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Terry, and Jason Kidd. He helped the team to an NBA championship beating Miami in the finals. Plenty of teams were courting him in free agency as the Mavericks offered him only a two-year deal. According to Chandler, if the winning team was kept intact, Dallas could have been back-to-back champions.

Chandler joined the Knicks next on a four-year $58 million deal where he became an NBA All-Star in 2013, the first time in his career. Injuries started to catch up to him. He spent some time with the Mavericks again before moving to the Phoenix Suns and then the Lakers and the Rockets. The former California native finished his career by being named to the NBA All-Defensive Team once the NBA Defensive Player of the Year in 2012.
