Two players Celtic must offload in the January transfer window

With the January transfer window fast approaching, teams will be sketching out plans to strengthen their squad with some new additions in order to achieve their objectives at the end of the season. At the same time, there are likely to exits as well, with clubs looking to either offload some of the dead weight or sell players to generate funds for new players.

It promises to be a crucial window for Scottish champions Celtic after a rather disappointing summer. Incomings at Parkhead are a guarantee in a couple of months’ time but here are two players that Brendan Rodgers should consider letting go of in the January transfer window;

Marvin Compper

Marvin Compper

The 33-year-old German defender arrived in January earlier this year from RB Leipzig in a deal worth €1.14 million (h/t Transfermarkt), with Rodgers looking to add an experience to his defensive line. However, Compper’s signing has been a major disaster for Celtic.

So far in his stint at Celtic Park, the German centre-half has made a solitary competitive appearance, lasting 83 minutes in the Scottish FA Cup quarterfinal tie against Greenock Morton FC last season. In the ongoing campaign, Commper has not featured even once with injuries continuing to keep him out of the team.

The 33-year-old is surely on sizeable wages at the club but has hardly kicked a ball in the past year. And Celtic would be best served by allowing Compper leave in the winter transfer window in order to reduce their wage bill.

Jonny Hayes

Jonny Hayes

The 31-year-old winger arrived amid a lot of expectations from Aberdeen in the summer of 2017 but his switch to Celtic Park has failed to work out as desired. Hayes made 20 appearances in the last season scoring just one goal, missing the second half of the campaign completely due to an injury.

Back to full fitness this time out, the Irishman has struggled to carve out a place in Rodgers’ first-team once again and has featured just three times across all competitions with no goals to show for.

With James Forrest, Scott Sinclair and the young duo of Lewis Morgan and Michael Johnston all ahead of him in the pecking order, Celtic would be better off cutting their losses on the former Aberdeen star when the winter transfer window rolls in.
