Two centre-backs who could be ideal for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers

Having brought in as many as 12 players over the past couple of months, Scottish giants Rangers are still looking to add more bodies to their squad (h/t Daily Record).

The Gers, under Steven Gerrard, have strengthened their roster considerably as they must aim to topple arch-rivals Celtic from their perch in the Scottish Premiership. Things have gotten off to a promising start, with the Light Blues yet to taste defeat under their new manager.

Following Rangers’ 3-3 draw against Motherwell on Sunday, Gerrard claimed in his post-match press conference that the club were looking to bring in another defender in the coming week.

The Gers already signed Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic in the summer. Both players have settled in quite comfortably at Ibrox. However, the manager has expressed his desire to strengthen that area of the pitch further, and to that end, here are two players Gerrard should consider signing.

Joe Worrall (Nottingham Forest)

Joe Worrall

The 21-year old English defender finds himself way down the pecking order in Aitor Karanka’s side, following the summer arrivals of Michael Dawson, Tobias Figueiredo and Michael Hefele.

A promising talent, Worrall captained the England U20 team to taste success in the Toulon Tournament 2017. On the back of his international success, the youngster went on to make 35 appearances for Forest across all competitions, bagging a solitary goal and impressing with his defensive nous.

However, Worrall is yet to make a single Championship appearance in the ongoing campaign and Rangers should capitalize on the situation and take him on a season-long loan. Although Worrall is quite young, he is experienced enough to make a difference. Hence, the 21-year old would be a good addition to the side, considering his ball-playing abilities and leadership qualities.

Sam Hughes (Leicester City)

Sam Hughes

Signed from Chester back in the summer of 2017, the 21-year-old centre-back was absolutely sensational for the Foxes’ U23 side in the Premier League 2. In the 2017/18 campaign, Hughes produced 8 goals and 4 assists from 24 appearances across all competitions, which is exceptional considering that he featured mostly as a centre-back.

Despite being 21 years of age, Hughes has shown great maturity and personality. The former Chester defender captained the team on a number of occasions in the last season and was a vocal presence on the field, organizing things at the back.

With Leicester bringing in the likes of Filip Benkovic and Caglar Soyuncu to complement the likes of Wes Morgan, Harry Maguire and Yohan Benalouane, Hughes’ pathway to the Foxes’ first-team is anything but easy and he would benefit from a loan spell.

A young and commanding centre-back, who can also provide cover in the defensive midfield position, the Englishman would be the perfect utility man for Gerrard and Rangers.
