Why Tottenham must make a move for Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler
Back in March 2019, Daily Mail had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Valencia midfielder Carlos Soler. However, no deal materialised last summer.
Carlos Soler, 23, is a product of the Valencia youth system, having joined the set up at the age of eight in 2005. Since breaking into Valencia’s first-team in the 2016-17 season, the Spaniard has racked up over 130 appearances across all competitions. He has played 18 La Liga games so far this campaign, scoring two goals.
The 23-year-old signed a new deal at the Mestalla Stadium in December, which has a £140m buy-out clause. (h/t Daily Mirror) Nevertheless, Tottenham must rekindle their interest in Soler when the summer transfer window opens.
Spurs suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to RB Leipzig in Germany, losing 4-0 on aggregate in the Champions League round of 16. It has been a difficult run of games for Tottenham. Losing to Norwich City on penalties in the FA Cup saw Jose Mourinho’s best chance of silverware vanish, before he got dumped out of the Champions League by RB Leipzig.
Exits in cup competitions have been a bitter pill to swallow for Mourinho’s Tottenham. However, some wretched recent form under Mourinho has seen Spurs slip to 8th place in the Premier League, although they remain just four points behind fifth-placed Manchester United.
There is a lot of room for improvement as far as the Tottenham squad is concerned. The defensive unit has failed miserably, which has led to the team’s downfall, while injuries to forwards Harry Kane and Son Heung-min have hit Spurs right on their face.
Mourinho has faced a lot of problems in midfield as well. Tanguy Ndombele has endured an injury-hit debut season in North London, while the form of Eric Dier and Harry Winks has wavered for the majority of the campaign. Giovani Lo Celso has been a rare bright spot in midfield but he has lacked a reliable player alongside him, with Moussa Sissoko out with a knee problem.
That being said, Spurs must do everything possible to recruit Carlos Soler from Valencia before the start of 2020/21 campaign.
During the 2018-19 campaign, Soler made 27 starts and four substitute appearances in the league for Valencia, scoring two goals and providing six assists in the process. He also made six starts and one substitute appearance in the Europa League last season, and scored two goals and provided two assists in six Champions League games.

At the age of 23, the Spaniard has played over 130 games for Valencia. This gives an idea about Soler’s experience in La Liga and European competitions. He is a player who is adept at playing anywhere in the midfield, so he’ll certainly be a handy acquisition for Mourinho.
Verdict
The Valencia star would certainly bring quality and depth to this Tottenham squad and would be a useful asset if he shows his true form. If Soler quickly adapts to the Premier League, he would be influential for the North Londoners in the years to come. Therefore, Spurs should make a move for the Spaniard in the summer and lure him to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.
