Tottenham Opinion: Why Lucas Tousart will be a good fit at Tottenham?

Back in March 2018, Calciomercato claimed that Tottenham were interested in Lyon midfielder Lucas Tousart, but a transfer never happened.

Lucas Tousart, 22, enjoyed a strong 2018/19 campaign with Lyon where he made 42 appearances across all competitions, helping the club achieve a third place finish and as a result, an entry in the Europa League.

The French midfielder’s strong performances over the last two seasons in Ligue 1 must definitely prompt Tottenham in reigniting their interest in him.

Spurs made real strides this past season, as the club not only finished in the top four but also went as far as the Champions League final. The fans should have high hopes in the upcoming season after how well their team performed and came close to winning the Champions League. However, there are a few issues that Mauricio Pochettino has to address in this summer transfer window.

It has been well documented that Tottenham could do with a new central midfielder, particularly due to Eric Dier’s underwhelming performances during the past campaign and the injury problems to Harry Winks and Victor Wanyama.

Moussa Sissoko was the only reliable presence in midfield and while he has nailed down a regular place in Pochettino’s starting XI, the Frenchman needs a strong presence besides him from next season.

That said, Lucas Tousart should be the standard of signing that Tottenham should be looking at if they want to achieve their ambitions next season.

Tousart has gone from strength to strength since breaking into Lyon’s first-team in 2017/18. A defensive midfielder by trade, the 22-year-old is excellent at stopping opposition’s plays and possesses the strength to hold off challenges. He is a good passer of the ball, always willing to pass forward rather than going sideways and backwards.

A hard-working and technically gifted midfielder, the Frenchman is not flashy and his strength and power help him go toe-to-toe with physically dominant forwards.

No longer is he simply an energetic ball-winner; Tousart has developed into a fine all-action midfielder, although one cannot expect a regular supply of goals from him.

As someone who gives more protection to the backline, Tousart would then leave more space for the likes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli to roam into and create more goalscoring opportunities.

He certainly fits Spurs’ need for a young, energetic destroyer in midfield. Alongside Sissoko, the two can create a fantastic midfield base for Tottenham.

Tousart is a highly talented midfielder and his qualities and style of play will see him fit perfectly into Pochettino’s system. Hence, Spurs must secure his signature at any cost before the start of the season.
