Tottenham Opinion: Why James Maddison will be a top fit for Spurs?

According to February’s report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are interested in signing Leicester City star James Maddison this summer.

James Maddison, 22, first shot to stardom last season while playing for Norwich City in the Championship. His performances didn’t go unnoticed, as Leicester came calling and signed him last summer.

And the playmaker has adapted to life in the Premier League extremely well, scoring seven goals and supplying as many assists in 34 league games for the Foxes. The report claims James Maddison is said to be at the top of Mauricio Pochettino’s wishlist due to his playing style being similar to Christian Eriksen.

Eriksen has stalled over signing a new deal with Tottenham, who would rather sell him this summer, than keep hold of him before losing him on a free transfer. The Dane, who has been long linked with a move to Real Madrid, has a contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium until the summer of 2020.

If Eriksen is reluctant to commit his future at the club, it would be wise on Pochettino’s part to sell the star playmaker and replace him with James Maddison at the end of the season.

Pochettino has built a really quality side that is capable of defeating any given European team on their day. And in this side, Eriksen’s contributions have been significant and replacing him would make a mighty task for Pochettino and company. It’s extremely tough to replace the creative genius of the Dane but not impossible.

Maddison fits the profile perfectly at Tottenham, as his qualities and style of play make him an almost like-for-like replacement for Eriksen. The 22-year-old has a huge potential to fulfill and inside just a season with Leicester, one has already got an idea of how immensely talented the Englishman is.

Of course, Maddison is far away from what Eriksen is right now for Spurs, but, at 22, he has the room to grow and develop further. The former Coventry City starlet is an excellent passer of the ball, capable of rolling through balls and unlocking defences in one blink of an eye.

He is a tireless worker off the ball, something which Pochettino wants every single player of his team to be. Plus, the 22-year-old is a set-piece expert, renowned for free-kicks and delivering pin-point balls into the box.

Given his age and the fact that he only signed for Leicester last summer, Maddison would cost a lot of money, but Mauricio Pochettino has already shown his talent to nurture raw talents into diamonds. The meteoric rise of Dele Alli, who impeccably made the step up from League One to the Premier League after joining from MK Dons, is testament to this.

Verdict

Even with a huge price-tag, Maddison is exactly the sort of player that Pochettino and Daniel Levy would do well to purchase. Truly, his acquisition in the summer will certainly help Spurs make a statement ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
