Tottenham Hotspur Opinion: Maxi Gomez: Spurs’ ideal striking option?

According to a recent report by The Express, Tottenham Hotspur’s are considering a summer approach for Celta Vigo’s Uruguayan international striker Maxi Gomez as they plan to bring in reinforcements.

Despite getting to the final of the UEFA Champions League, Spurs weren’t able to take advantage of the situation and ended up losing out to bitter rivals Liverpool.

Tottenham went into last season having made no additions to the side in the summer and Mauricio Pochettino justified that decision by saying that he was more than content with the squad that was already at his disposal.

Although things didn’t start off too badly for this Spurs side, around the midway point of the season, things started to go south and drastically.

They began to drop points all over the place and if it wasn’t bad enough, all the mockery about the delay in the opening of their new stadium only piled up the pressure on the entire unit.

The Christmas period came as a massive reality check to Mauricio Pochettino and his staff about the unforgiving nature of Premier League football.

Injuries to key figures in the squad were compiled with Son Heung-Min’s long absence owing to the AFC Asian Cup, where he was required to represent his country – South Korea.

While Dele Alli and Lucas Moura suffered along the way too, the knock that hit them the hardest was the long-term injury picked up by Harry Kane.

With the English talisman out of the equation, Pochettino was left with Fernando Llorente as the first-choice striker and with the season now completed, it can be said with confidence that the Spaniard isn’t Premier League first-choice material.

The need for a new striker to challenge Kane to starting spot is higher than ever at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Maxi Gomez

Maxi Gomez is the man they have identified for the job and it seems like this could be a match made in heaven. His combative and aggressive style will suit the pace with which Spurs attack and the support from players like Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli will only help the Uruguayan prosper.

His figures in last season’s La Liga read 13 goals and 5 assists from 35 league games.

Tall, strong and inexplicably clinical in the box, Gomez has all the right ingredients to be a massive hit in the Premier League. Spurs have struggled to offer Harry Kane any kind of completion for the striking spot for a few years now and the complacency is starting to hurt them.

The addition of a player like Gomez is just what they need to finally finish the league title puzzle.
