Why Tottenham should avoid signing Rafael Camacho in the summer

According to Football Insider (h/t The Express), Tottenham are one of the host of Premier League clubs monitoring Sporting Lisbon star Rafael Camacho.

The Portuguese, 19, left Liverpool for Sporting Lisbon in the summer in search of regular first-team football. He has done well in Primeira Liga this season, managing an assist in 10 appearances. Rafael Camacho shone in Sporting’s loss in the Lisbon Derby against Benfica and Tottenham scouts are understood to have watched him closely from the stands, the Football Insider claims. The report (h/t The Express) adds the Portuguese Under-20 international is contracted at Sporting Lisbon until June 2024 but he has indicated a willingness to leave the club, with Liverpool keeping in contact with Camacho.

Tottenham’s squad is brimful with talent and it was further enhanced with the January addition of Steven Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven. They also signed Gedson Fernandes on an 18-month loan from Benfica, whilst turning Giovani Lo Celso’s loan move permanent.

Spurs have a serial winner at the helm in Jose Mourinho, who has three Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and one FA Cup to his name. Mourinho, though, will need to make some significant additions to his squad if his team are to challenge for the Premier League title next season. The Portuguese brought in two players over January to strengthen his squad—a midfielder and a winger.

Tottenham were already strong in the wide department and the addition of Bergwijn has further beefed up the squad. As far as Rafael Camacho is concerned, he is a right-winger by trade but he can also operate on the left, or in midfield and at full-back. The Portuguese is having a decent season with Sporting, and going by his talent and the qualities he would bring to a team, Tottenham don’t exactly need wide players.

In Lucas Moura, Son Heung-min, Erik Lamela, Ryan Sessegnon and Steven Bergwijn, Mourinho has a plethora of options to select in wide areas and that should make the acquisition of Camacho totally pointless. In fact, Tottenham should target a clinical striker in the summer due to lack of options and competition for Harry Kane, who is currently out with a hamstring injury.

Verdict

Hence, Tottenham should not waste their resources in signing Camacho from Sporting. Mourinho has other areas to address and must spend the club’s money wisely in the summer.
