Tottenham Opinion: Why Benfica’s Jota could be a smart signing for Spurs?

According to a report from Portuguese media outlet Record, Tottenham have already made an approach to sign Benfica winger Jota.

Jota, 20, is a product of Benfica’s youth system and has made 47 appearances for Benfica B. He was promoted to the senior team in February 2019, and the youngster managed just four appearances in Liga Nos.

The report claims Jota has £26.3 million release clause inserted into his current contract, which means he is a highly attainable target for Tottenham.

Tottenham didn’t make a single signing in the last two transfer windows, yet have reached the Champions League final this season.

Now, after guiding Tottenham to a Champions League final for the first time in the club’s history, Mauricio Pochettino has to spend big to improve his squad for next season. The newly built Tottenham Hotspur Stadium could also act as a lure for exciting, top class talents.

Whatever happens against Liverpool in the Champions League final in Madrid, Spurs must invest this summer if they are to realistically challenge for the title next term. Pochettino will no doubt have a host of players in mind for what is expected to be a big transfer window.

A backup striker for Harry Kane has to be on Pochettino’s wish list, with the England international struggling with injuries this season. Kane, Spurs talisman, has not played since he damaged ankle ligaments against Manchester City on 9 April, but he is nearing a return to fitness.

In the England skipper’s absence, Heung-min Son, Lucas Moura and Fernando Llorente have taken on the role of central striker for Spurs, with mixed success.

But with Llorente set to leave the club this summer after Spurs missed the deadline to extend his contract by another season, Pochettino should shift his attention towards Jota and get him signed.

Jota is another top young talent coming through Benfica’s factory, alongside Ruben Dias, Florentino Luis and Joao Felix.

Predominantly a left-winger, the 20-year-old is equally adept at playing on the right or through the middle. He can play alongside a top striker, making him ideal to line up with Harry Kane instead of simply being an option out wide.

Verdict

The Benfica ace is hugely exciting talent and at just 20, he has a massive room to develop his game. Pochettino could be the right manager to nurture the talented Jota, whose £26.3 million release clause, in today’s market and age, make him an excellent value for money.
