Rodrigo de Paul would be a good signing for Tottenham in January

According to the Express, Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Udinese playmaker Rodrigo de Paul to bolster their options and cope with the absence of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.

The same report claims that the 24-year-old Argentine international has switched agents to enhance his chances of securing a move away from his current club Udinese.

De Paul has been in wonderful form in the Serie A this term, accumulating 6 goals and 3 assists from 19 appearances. The 24-year-old has been one of the brightest sparks of Udinese’s lacklustre campaign so far, with the playmaker keeping his club above the relegation zone with his heroics.

The Argentinian started his professional career back in his native land with Racing Club before joining Valencia back in 2014. However, he failed to make an impression in the La Liga in his debut season and was loaned back to his boyhood club for the next season before Udinese offered him an escape route in 2016.

De Paul has not only resurrected his faltering career but has also attracted the attention of some of the Serie A giants, registering 15 goals and 15 assists from 94 appearances for Udinese.

Essentially an inverted winger operating down the left, de Paul is known for his technique, vision, passing and eye for goal as a playmaker. He is not the quickest of players on the pitch but his vision, which is one of his key weapons, helps him overcome his relative lack of pace.

De Paul has the ability to dribble past the opposition with his trickery and the 24-year-old has also impressed with his high levels of tactical awareness, linking up with his teammates and finding defence-splitting through balls to release them into open spaces. He often cuts inside from the wide areas, where he either has a crack on goal or tries to work the half spaces between the defenders.

To add to that, he is known for my his superior work rate, dropping down deep to win back possession for his team. Furthermore, he is a good distance shooter who is adept at finding the net with powerful shots from outside the box.

De Paul has averaged 2.6 shots per game, 2.6 key passes, 1.3 crosses and 4.8 long balls per game, figures which speak volumes of his wonderful range of passing and well-rounded abilities as a playmaker.

To put things into perspective, Spurs can bag a massive coup if they can get their hands on the coveted Serie A playmaker in the January transfer window. The Lilywhites currently sit 3rd in the standings, 4 points clear of 4th-placed Chelsea and 5 adrift of Manchester City.

Mauricio Pochettino has a tough challenge on his hands to cope with the long list of injuries for the upcoming fixtures against Arsenal, Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund in the weeks to come. Harry Kane has been ruled out with an ankle injury till March while Heung-min Son has taken time away from the club to represent South Korea at the AFC Asian Cup. Dele Alli suffered a hamstring injury against Fulham on Sunday to add to Pochettino’s woes.

Spurs need more options in their attacking third to cover for the absence of some of their key players and someone like de Paul, who can be creative is certainly a good option for the Lilywhites.

Even though Kane is expected to be back before the end of the campaign, Spurs should not hesitate to bolster their attack with the Argentinian international. Still only 24, he is only going to get better with time and having said that, the north Londoners should go all out to sign him.
