Tottenham weigh up a bid for Joe Rodon – Would it be useful?

According to Wales OnlineTottenham are mulling over the prospect of bringing in Joe Rodon from Swansea before the domestic transfer window closes. The centre-back is also a target for West Ham as both clubs try to secure a defender.

Joe Rodon is a 22-year-old Welsh centre-back who plays for Championship side Swansea City. He is a product of Swansea’s youth setup and has been with the club since 2005. The defender was promoted to the U-21 side in 2015.

In 2018, he was loaned to Cheltenham and went on to make 12 appearances for them. On his return, he was called up to the senior squad. In total, he has 59 appearances for the U-23’s and 54 more for the senior side to date (source – Transfermarkt).

After being a part of the Wales U-21’s, he has also appeared 4 times for the senior team.

Would Rodon be useful for Spurs?

It was no secret that Spurs wanted to cap off a stellar transfer embargo with the signing of a defender. They had their eyes on Inter Milan’s Milan Skriniar (source – Football.london). However, no deal could be agreed upon within the deadline of 5th October.

A defender was needed because Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth had left the club and there were only the likes of Alderweireld, Eric Dier, Tanganga and Davinson Sanchez in central defence. While those are enough names to go through a season, it would only take one injury to throw everything in disarray.

These extra few days of the domestic window gives Spurs a chance to continue their search for a defender.

Joe Rodon looks like a good solution for Spurs and Mourinho. The centre-back has gathered quite some experience in the Championship and would have no problem being eased into the team.

At just 22 years of age, he has become a solid defender and has more than enough time to build on that. Jose Mourinho would surely like to work with a young defender with good potential.

Under Mourinho’s tutelage, Rodon can develop into a fine centre-back, something that would benefit Spurs too. Signing Rodon would be a very useful move for the North London club and they should try to work out a deal as soon as possible.
