Tottenham tipped to seal Olivier Giroud transfer despite Chelsea star's Inter agreement

Why Tottenham signing Olivier Giroud would be a great move

Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been tipped to join Tottenham in the January transfer window by Sky Sports pundit Gary O’Neil, as per Daily Express.

Harry Kane’s injury has left Spurs in the lurch more than ever. Son Heung-min is a capable deputy for Kane and yet, something is still missing from Jose Mourinho’s attacking ranks.

Mourinho’s side will be without the main striker for the foreseeable future after he tore his hamstring in the 1-0 loss against Southampton on New Year’s Day. The England captain has scored 17 goals in all competitions this season, leaving a huge void to fill.

Giroud has started just two Premier League games this season. So far, he has scored one goal this season – in the UEFA Super Cup – and has 19 goals in 70 games for Chelsea since signing for them. He scored 105 goals in 203 games for Arsenal.

Giroud has appeared just seven times for Chelsea this season – the most recent of those coming at the end of November in their defeat to West Ham United. He was an unused substitute as a much-changed Chelsea saw off Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup. With Euro 2020 on the horizon, Giroud needs to play regularly to stake his claim for a spot in the national team.

Giroud has been kept out of the Chelsea team by Tammy Abraham, who has been in terrific form this season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham need a replacement for Fernando Llorente. The Spaniard was a vital cog in Mauricio Pochettino’s machine that reached the Champions League final last season. In fact, it was Llorente’s goal in the quarter-final against Manchester City that provided the most memorable moment of their campaign.

Kane lacks a proper back-up and getting in a striker should be Mourinho’s first priority in this window. Giroud has found the going tough at Chelsea and has fallen down the pecking order. But he has proven himself in the Premier League and would be a good back-up for Harry Kane. However, it remains to be seen if he would take the big step of joining a third club in the same city.
