Why Tottenham must make a move for Max Aarons in the summer

According to Daily Express, Tottenham are planning a move for Norwich City right-back Max Aarons in the summer transfer window.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is eyeing a £120million summer investment to improve his backline ahead of the next season. The report adds that Tottenham are interested in Max Aarons and will make a £15million bid in the summer.

Aarons, 20, has been an important player at Carrow Road this season, playing 23 games so far. He played a key role in Norwich City’s promotion from the Championship last term. The right-back is not only a regular fixture for Daniel Farke’s side in the top-flight but has also broken into the England Under-21s side this season.

Meanwhile, Spurs have struggled defensively this term, conceding 32 goals in 25 games. Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez have been inconsistent at the back this term. In addition to a centre-back, Mourinho’s side needs a new right-back.

Serge Aurier has improved somewhat in the right-back position under Mourinho but the Ivorian needs more competition next season. Not to forget, the north London club sold Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid in the summer and farmed Kyle Walker-Peters out on loan to Southampton in January.

Thus, recruiting a right-back is vital for Tottenham and Aarons would be a good fit for the London club.

As per WhoScored, Aarons has averaged 1.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.9 clearances and 0.9 blocks in 23 Premier League appearances. He is yet to contribute with a goal or an assist so far this season.

Aurier, meanwhile, has averaged 3.3 tackles, 1.9 interceptions, 2.7 clearances and 0.3 blocks in 20 Premier League appearances. Going forward, the Spurs defender has registered four assists. [Courtesy: WhoScored]

When compared, Aurier has better numbers than Aarons in almost every single department but he has had a mediocre campaign for Spurs. On the other hand, Aarons is impressing during his first season in the Premier League, despite playing for a Norwich side reeling at the foot of the table.

Although not an instant upgrade on Aurier (in terms of statistics), the 20-year-old would be a good option to add strength as well as competition to the right-back position.

Verdict

Aarons is an exciting right-back and only 20 years old, so he has plenty of room to develop his game. Regardless of the statistics, this is one good reason why Mourinho should sign the Norwich star to solve his right-back woes.
